Gymnasts return from Nationals with big bounty

The Club’s top level gymnasts had a successful National championship, returning with no less than 18 medals

On the opening day Ella Wood placed 3rd on bars in Class 1 and she finished comfortably in the top 10 overall.

This was followed by a strong showing of the men’s trio of Henco Ingram, Andy Flynn and Liam Randall. Henco and Liam finished as close runner ups in their respective Level 8 section, with Liam almost making a clean sweep of apparatus medals ( 5 out of a possible 6!) and Henco pocketing another 2.

Andrew finished a well deserved 3rd overall and he collected another 5 apparatus medals for all his efforts.

Erin Bell finished off a successful Saturday session by earning herself two apparatus medals in the tough Junior Olympic section. She also gymned herself into contention for selection for African Champs, to be held in Egypt next year. She will soon travel to Europe for her first international event to gain more experience.

Great success at National championships

The 2016 National Gym Games proved once again that Durban North Gym Club is right up there with the best clubs in SA.

Caroline Wassenaar rounded off a good year with a silver medal on beam ( level 4), while Timothy Joss scored a surprise Bronze on Vault in the Level 5 section.

In the higher levels Liam Randall almost scored a full house of medals. A controversial penalty on Rings dropped him to 3rd overall, but he bagged 2 Golds ( Floor and P-bar), 1 Silver ( Pommel) and 2 Bronzes (Vault and H-bar)

Henco Ingram took part in level 8 and won the P-bar event and placed 2nd on Vault.

There were other good performances and some “near medals” by many more, well done to everyone who participated !!!!!

Good start to Level 4-8 season

Durban North gymnasts returned with plenty of smiles and medals after the season opening Pinetown competition. Despite it being the first event of the season, there were some promising displays throughout all levels and age groups.

At times our athletes occupied two and even all three medal positions. Though it is still early days, the real marker will be the KZN championships which is 4 weeks before the national event ( Cape Town). Until then the pace setters have to refine some parts of their routines if they want to be medal contenders whereas others have to “tighten up” and improve on some components of their routine if they want to qualify.

Club gymnasts clean up at KZN champs

The KZN Elite level championships were a happy hunting ground for our top gymnasts. Erin Bell and Daisy Dixon captured the Level 9 titles in their respective age groups while Gemma Wood came a close second to former team mate Joanne Gersbach.

The men were equally successful with Ryan Fredericks and Andrew Flynn winning the Level 9 and Class 3 section respectively. Now the focus is on the National champs which will be held in Pinetown on 1st July.

Club gymnasts impress at Nationals !!

Our High performance gymnasts were all smiles after a successful National championships. Held over three days in Cape Town, Daisy Dixon, Erin Bell, Andrew Flynn and Ryan Fredericks impressed with polished routines.

Ryan won the Level 8 section and is therefore also eligible to be selected for the South African federation team that will compete towards the end of the year against Namibia and Zimbabwe. He also won Vault, P-bar and H-bar as well as Rings and came second on the other two apparatuses.

Erin came second overall in the Level 7 section and picked up 4 apparatus medals , her gold on bars being her highlight.

Andrew collected 3 apparatus medals on day 2 after placing 4th overall on day 1.

Daisy came a credible 5th and could have been much closer to the top if it was not for an unfortunate fall off beam.

Well done to all the gymnasts – super proud of all of you.

KZN squad training with visitors from USA

Winter holidays just started but our top gymnasts were put through the paces at a recent KZN squad training. The 3 day event was well attended and there was plenty of learning and cheering !!! Our two visitors from the USA, Simone and Jasmine, also got a taste how tough our provincial team is and were subjected to some serious conditioning. Both trained with our club for a month and there were a few spots of moisture in some kids eyes when it was time to wish them farewell. We wish them all the best for their forthcoming competitions.

High level gymnasts ready for KZN champs !

The prep time is over and our aspiring top juniors are in their final stage before they travel to cape town for the 2015 National champs.

At the recent PMB competition Ryan Fredericks, Andrew Flynn and Erin Bell all impressed with 1st place and some stunning performances while Daisy Dixon placed a solid 2nd with some great performances.  The forthcoming KZN champs will be the final dress rehearsal before Nationals and should give the gymnasts a welcome boost of confidence. All 4 are medal contenders for Nationals and should spearhead the KZN challenge.
